Background
ComPeung is not only the 1st independent Artist Residency program in Thailand, but also the longest ongoing program since 2007. We have hosted over 100 artists in a wide variety of disciplines from around the world.
As an evolving art project, ComPeung encourages artists to explore and discover – not only new ideas, techniques, and networks, but also themselves as human beings though the process of creative activities and everyday living. ComPeung aims to be an open space for dialogues, encouraging the exchange of ideas and experiments, and exploring the interdependence between art, artists and society.
History
In May 2009, two of our creative team set out on a dream catching journey in the Himalaya along the classic Annapurna Circuit trek. We faced unique experiences – walking through the earth’s deepest river valley, crossing the highest navigable pass in the world, meeting welcoming locals, and sharing paths with international trekkers. We hadn’t caught the dream, the dream had caught us, and inspired by this new found connection to the region we initiated Dear Himalaya, From Chiang Mai project.
Dear Himalaya, From Chiang Mai is an on-the-move Artist/Musician in Residency program between Thailand and Nepal, creating new dialogues and cross-cultural art experiences. The project began with a concert at Warm Up Cafe, a famous bar/restaurant in Chiang Mai town. We donated original artworks, food & drinks, and invited local musicians and friends to perform music and screen short films at the event.
With the funds we collected from this event we have managed to fund our first Nepalese artist, Manmohan Thapaliya to come to ComPeung. Manmohan is classical Nepali musician who masters beautiful Tabla and has incredible energy in his voice. His music is not considered a standard music that we familiar with, but more of a Raga, an ancient tradition to have the ability to “color the mind” and affect the emotions of the audience.
To continue the project and complete the exchange we will now hold an outdoor concert at ComPeung where Manmohan will perform with a host of Thai and international musicians.
With the funds raised from this latest concert, we will continue the project and return to the Himalaya in Nepal with a Thai musician and a filmmaker to cross the highest navigable pass in the world on Annapurna Circuit trek, the same inspiring route we went through in 2009. We will organize a mini concert or jamming session in Nepal. The Thai filmmaker will create a new work based on our journey.
We wish to maintain and continue this project as an annual ongoing event in both Chiang Mai and Nepal.

Our experiences shape how we see the world and interact with each other. The more we experience the more we have the potential to understand. We are bringing together musicians, visual artists and filmmakers in this unique program to exchange their creativity, stories, cultures, and everyday personal identities, to grow both understanding and art practice.
We also believe that art is a versatile tool in exercising freedom of expression that can have a very positive influence on our emotions, moods and behaviour. We want to be a bridge to bring people together – scouts to explore new possibilities, and ambassadors of our own cultures.
We all need space and time. The benefits of Artist Residency programs are enormous for artists. On a very basic level, it gives an artist time and space in which to work away from their normal lives. Artist Residencies place artists in new communal contexts with new peers from all over the world. These factors create an environment where artists can make substantial jumps in their work in a short amount of time.
There is currently no independent cultural exchange residency between Thailand and Nepal. Government cultural programmes are usually one sided – sending art practices from Thailand to Nepal. We want to building cultural and environment awareness through this program without our freedom being compromised by Government policies and agendas.
What will happen?
We hope to continue maintaining the new Artist/Musician in Residency and Exchange program between Thailand and Nepal in the following years – inviting artists/musicians from Nepal to stay and work in Thailand, and sending Thai artists/musicians to stay and work in Nepal.
We also want to continue the new music festival, Dear Himalaya, From Chiang Mai, as an alternative platform for local and international musicians (with invited artist(s) from Nepal) to perform together and inspired each other.

What is an Artist Residency ?
It is a type of art program that invites artists/musicians for a time and space away from their usual environment and obligations. We provide a time of reflection, research, presentation, production and immersion into a new culture. We allow the artists to explore their practice within another community; meeting new people, using new materials, experiencing life in a new location and potentially integrating elements of that experience into their art. Artist Residencies emphasize the importance of meaningful and multi-layered cultural exchange and immersion into another culture.

Manmohan Thapaliya Sharma
Manmohan is classical Nepali musician who masters beautiful Tabla and has incredible energy in his voice. His music is not considered a standard music that we familiar with, but more of a Raga, an ancient tradition to have the ability to “color the mind” and affect the emotions of the audience. He was one of the main lead singers in Jazzmandu 2017, an annual jazz festival in Kathmandu, Nepal. We invited Manmohan especially for this event to be the 1st ambassador of the new music exchange programme between Thailand and Nepal.

Master Monkol Seangshalee (พ่อครูมงคล เสียงชารี)
A local guru in Lanna music and Khon (โขน – traditional royal Thai dance drama). He is also a founder of Lanna Art and Culture Centre in Doisaket that offer free lessons of Lanna music and martial arts for local and international students for decades.
Took Brasserie (Watchara Charoenpon – ตุ๊ก Brasserie)
“Jimmy Hendrix of Lanna”, the legend guitarist of Chiang Mai. Took has his very special ability to drive you into the deep sound of rock & blues. If you don’t know him, just ask any Chiang Mai local in their 30’s of how he has been an iconic figure of our music scene.
Catherine Thompson
Catherine is living a somewhat nomadic existence mostly, at present, in the middle of a jungle in Mae Kham Pong village, Chiang Mai. Through Music Forest Instruments and Goze in the Foothill of the Himalaya her work is devoted to creating a deep & deepening connection with the wild natural world. A reawakening. Catherine is a composer, vocalist, musician, instrument maker, visual & material artist

Jui Juis
Suttipong Sutinrum (Thai: สุทธิพงศ์ สุทินรัมย์) is a Thai musician and singer, known by the stage name Jui Juis (Thai: จุ๋ย จุ๋ยส์), One of the most successful by popular song such as “บทที่ 1 (Lesson 1)” The song peaked at No.1 on the FM SEED CHART TOP 20 on Radio station on 12 July 2009. He is well-known for singing beatbox and known as a “one man band”.
Paul Pinto
Paul Pinto is a composer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist from New York. He makes weird noises sometimes. Sometimes with his experimental music groups thingNY and Varispeed. Other times just in his living room. Sometimes he writes them on paper and makes other people make the weird noises for him. Some of these sounds end up becoming new verbose operas and vocal-theatre, and sometimes, just sometimes, some people pay attention and hire him to do make more.
Besides performing few solo songs and stories written while in residency at ComPeung, Paul will have a brief but torrid jam alongside Dirk Johan Stromberg.
Dirk Johan Stromberg
Dirk Stromberg is an improviser who enjoys delving deep into the possibilities of different musical languages. Playing the “Phallophone”, an embedded e-instrument designed and created by himself, Dirk explores new musical and aesthetic possibilities in jazz, classical, electro-acoustic, and popular music. In love with timbral possibilities his work often come in and out of pitched worlds and newly imagined colors.
Dirk plays and presents his work regularly in Europe, Asia and the United States. He is a founder of the Contemporary Music Festival in Vietnam (Duong Dai Festival – 2007-Present) and is currently on faculty at LASALLE College of the Arts.

Tommy Tee & JK
Tommy Tee entered the DJ scene when he moved to Ibiza in 2001.
