Bodies of Water Adjacent to ComPeung, 2014

Raychel Steinbach is a Midwest American printmaker who investigates the convergence of landscape, storytelling, map, and personal interactions act as a way of creating work that reflects that uniqueness of place in a time when globalization is making our world increasingly placeless. During her time at ComPeung, she created a series of intimate mixed media prints about the journey between the point of departure and the destination, the geographical surroundings, and flora of ComPeung.  The work combines found objects as the printmaking matrix, embroidery to create line and depth, as well as traditional wood block techniques. Raychel explored layering maps, textures, and hand carved blocks on top of each other using very transparent inks, to create unexpected combinations while reacting to each layer as it develops.
